Under the Root

This has been a long time coming.
Please allow me to introduce Jennifer M. Brown from Under The Root, designer of vintage fable inspired loungerie and boudoir accessories and creator of my most beloved knee socks.
I love her aesthetic, it fits my image of wood nymphs spiriting through the forests. (Remember I just finished watching my son’s performance in Midsummer’s Night Dream, more than once, and I have fairies languishing in my head). Jennifer’s very new, and wonderful website has specific stories to tell about each collection. She kindly credits the photographer, the models and she brings you into her ‘environment’ which defines each collection. Please take the time to read her descriptions, they are lovely.
From Jennifer,
“Our works here are structured from reclaimed, sustainable, and many times vintage materials. My great-grandmother was a seamstress and I remember her allowing me to nurture my catlike curiosity among her notions, fondling spools of thread, wrapping myself in linens. The actualization came from inside a high school (sewing) classroom from another woman in my life who was a quietly grounded person.
I have always admired the human body and simply wanted to swaddle it. The drive to master design was, and continues to be, secretly the adventure running concurrently to my desire for body movement. A silent joy happens within me when a piece is finished. I feel a whirl of laughter begin when a design turns out just right. I know, too, that somehow the day will begin again with more obstacles for me to try to cartwheel over.
There is a yin and yang with every step. The rewards in each decision feed the growth of further ones. Some provide a simple kick in the head. Many times I have been thwarted by unseen obstacles which then have led me to challenges in the mastering of my dreams. Our clients are thinkers. They are often artists themselves or people who value art. I see and hear them shout from the rooftops. They are women and men wrapped in nostalgia, changing the shape of our universe with their breath.
Right now, we are in the process of adding materials to the Autumn 2011 collection, Olivia Orchard. A preview is always posted inside the shop, and the history of collections can be seen at our most recent adventure
This Spring and Summer brings in an age for us which flutters around the industrial, victorian eras. I adore working with seersucker and silk and stripes, more of these to come.
Thank you for peeking under the roots with me, Michel. Your grace and brilliance precede you.
Big love, Jennifer
Mushroom Circles SS2011

A lovely letter from a kindred friend. I look forward to her new collections and currently am fantasizing about a bit of vintage loungerie for the summer months ahead. Enjoy . . .
You might ask, what is Verdure? Under the Root defines this environment as ‘Post Apolcalyptic Hunting Lodge’.
